About Mayflower Transit
On July 27, 1927, Indiana grocer Conrad M. Gentry and his friend Don F. Kenworthy founded Mayflower Transit Co. in Indianapolis, Ind., as an alternative to railroads for customers
who were interested in moving their belongings across the country on the newly-paved roads. The new enterprise became known for providing safe door-to-door pickup and
delivery. In 1928, Burnside Smith added capital and management expertise, reincorporated the business as Aero Mayflower Transit Company, and set the standard for the new
enterprise: "To have the best company...and the best people...offering the best services."
Seventy-eight years later, Mayflower Transit is one of the nation's largest movers of household goods and other commodities requiring specialized handling. Mayflower's
growth has mirrored the growth of the country. After obtaining, in 1940, the first nationwide household goods authority certificate issued by the Interstate Commerce Commission,
Mayflower introduced a succession of improvements in its equipment and service, and its market share grew steadily. By 1960, its name was the best-recognized in moving, a distinction
Mayflower maintains to this day.
Following extensive regulatory changes affecting the moving industry in the early 1980s, Mayflower, like a number of other major movers, underwent ownership changes, and in March
1995, it was acquired by UniGroup, Inc., a transportation and relocation company based in suburban St. Louis, Mo., where Mayflower now also maintains its headquarters. As part of UniGroup,
which is owned exclusively by full-time movers, Mayflower is extending its proud history of accomplishment as an innovator and a recognized provider of superior moving services to
individuals and corporate America. We're Mayflower Transit -- the right move, now and down the road.®
